Born and raised in Shanghai, I am most impressed by the street vendors and small shops on the way home after school.
Everyday around three or four in the afternoon, my classmates and I would walk along the Bund, facing the sun, walk our way home. The aroma of fried skewers and barbecue, accompanied by the sound of sizzling, always attract groups of children to stop and buy, holding coins in their hands, in exchange for a packet of salted chicken or a bunch of fried rice cakes with sweet and spicy sauce. Fried rice cakes are the biggest show off capital among children. And the small shop next to it was full of all kinds of snacks for fifty cents and colorful stickers. The chattering accompanied by the sound of popcorn are my unique memories of Shanghai.
